Dyslexia Testing and Assessment

Difficulties students with dyslexia might have had in learning language or with memory can affect the ability to learn the meanings of words . Independent reading is also an important means for developing new vocabulary. Poor readers, who usually read less, are likely to have delays in vocabulary development. It is important to note, however, that students with dyslexia may perform poorly on reading vocabulary tests because of their decoding problems and not because they don’t know the meaning of some words. For this reason, it is best to administer both a reading and listening vocabulary task to get a true measure of vocabulary knowledge. When a child is struggling to read, someone will probably suggest that he or she be tested for dyslexia.

Sam’s eligibility team answered yes to all of these questions and thus determined that Sam does meet eligibility criteria for SLD. Figure 2 is an example of the Dyslexia Assessment Worksheet that the eligibility team could use in considering this determination. Through the RTI process, Sam’s teachers were able to document lack of adequate progress, but they did not have enough information to understand the cause of his difficulties. Challenge # 3 – Professionals who are otherwise qualified don’t know which assessments they should be using to diagnose students. Tests at school also may not capture how slow and difficult reading actually is for kids. Or that some kids may take such a long time to decode words that they can’t remember what they just read. When a student is not achieving at an average rate, additional instruction (e.g., an additional hour of direct instruction for grades one through three) may be provided immediately to help them catch up. Student progress must be monitored using reliable and valid progress monitoring measures to be sure the gap is closing. Analysis of data must drive all school team decisions about a student’s program and learning profile. School can evaluate for a specific learning disability which is the IEP category that dyslexia falls under, but a child with dyslexia still might not qualify for services under an Individualized Education Plan .

These are known as educational assessments, psychoeducational assessments or evaluations. Before you book one, it’s important to know what is likely to happen before, during and after the assessment. For many parents and guardians of children with learning disabilities, as well as adult sufferers, that sense of powerlessness, of being lost with no idea where to start, is nearly as crippling as ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc. Often, they’ll have access to resources and referrals that can help with the price of an assessment.

After all, it is difficult to understand someone who speaks haltingly or without natural intonation. As a parent, you have certain rights and responsibilities when it comes to your child’s educational journey. Typically parents first go to the school because they recognize their child is struggling and maybe they’ve done their research and have heard of dyslexia and so they ask the school professionals if that might be the cause of their child’s struggle. Tests for dyslexia look at a number of skills related to reading, such as decoding, phonological awareness, and comprehension. But sometimes those tests have picture clues that can help kids figure out the words and the meaning of what they’re reading.
